Summer Reading...Summer Fun!

ImagesCAXPLTI0Braddock Eagles are looking forward to learning about the Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 1.  Public librarians from George Mason Regional Library will be on hand to fire students up for summer reading!

  • 9:20-9:50 - Third Grade
  • 10:00-10:30 - First Grade
  • 10:40-11:10 - Second Grade
  • 11:20-11:50 - Fourth Grade
  • 12:00-12:30 - Kindergarten

Did you know a library card gives you access to:

Dream Big...READ!

DreamThere are lots of big dreams this summer.  From Olympic hopefuls dreaming of medal glory to Braddock Eagles dreaming of summer swims, summer movies, and summer fun!  Summer reading can definitely be part of a great summer.  Here's how!

Dream Big...Read! - the Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Program kicks off June 15.  Students can register online or at any public library branch.  The FCPL program includes fun activities, completing reading goals, storytimes, and more!

Spring Book Fair: Buy One, Get One FREE!

Bogo_logoThe Braddock Elementary Spring Book Fair from Scholastic is coming soon to the Braddock Elementary School Library with a Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair!  This special event offers a great opportunity for you to add twice as many books to your child's home and classroom library.  For every item you buy, you get another item for FREE!  It's that simple - you'll leave the Fair with twice as many books!  And it is the perfect way to stock up on great books for the summer. 

The Scholastic Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair will be held from Friday, April 30 through Friday, May 4, 2012 and you don't want to miss it!

There will be a special Family Night on Thursday, May 3 from 6 to 8 p.m.  But please be sure to drop by anytime during the regular Fair hours during the school day.  Check out our Braddock Spring Book Fair Homepage at for dates, times, vounteer opportunities, and Bogo_left information about Read for the World Record.

Cwl There will be a Classroom Wishlist Board where Braddock teachers can let families know which books would benefit their classroom libraries.  Each book donation comes with a book donation sticker where your child can record his or her name.

Virginia Readers' Choice Program

VRClogoEach year the Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) selects several books at the Primary, Elementary, Middle, and High School levels as part of their Virginia Readers' Choice program.  During the school year students read the books listed for their levels and early in the spring vote for their favorite book.  These votes from across the state are tabulated to identify the top books in each category.

Braddock Eagles participate in this program each year. Click on the presentation below to learn about the nominated books for 2011-2012.

A Wonderful Poetry Assembly

Kalli Dakos 011On Tuesday, March 6, Braddock Elementary School showed visiting author Kalli Dakos a warm and enthusiastic welcome.  Eagles bopped, Eagles recited lines of poetry, there were chicken pops, allergies, opera, and Mrs. Botzin kissed a pig, not once but 6 times - talk about taking one for the team!

Ms. Dakos is on a promotional tour to celebrate her new collection of poetry, A Funeral in the Bathroom.  Ms. Dakos was a teacher at Braddock Elementary in 1987 and many of her early poems were inspired by her time at our school.  Students loved sharing their stories and learning that inspiration for poems and stories is all around them.  Kalli Dakos 044

Read Across America with Kalli Dakos!

FuneralBraddock is celebrating Read Across America with an author visit.  On Tuesday, March 6th, noted poet Kalli Dakos will be sharing her latest book of school poems,  A Funeral in the Bathroom, with Braddock students.  Ms. Dakos has a special connection to our school as she was a reading teacher here several years ago.  Braddock Eagles have an opportunity to preorder any of Ms, Dakos’ books and have them autographed. 

HatBraddock Elementary will commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a week of special days beginning on Friday, March 2nd.

  • Friday, March 2 - The Lorax Day – be like the Lorax and show your love for the earth by wearing something made from trash bags.
  • Monday, March 5 - - If I Ran the Zoo Day – bring your favorite stuffed animal to school.
  • Tuesday, March 6 – My Many Colored Days – dress in as many colors as you can wear (you don’t have to match!)
  • Wednesday, March 7 – Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book Day – wear your favorite pajamas to school – but don’t fall asleep! 
  • Thursday, March 8 – Fox in Socks Day – roll up your pant legs and show off your cool or crazy socks!

Fairy Tales and Fables and Legends and Myths, Oh My!

FolktalesFairy tales, folktales, legends, myths, and tall tales are some of the genres that make up traditional literature.  These wonderful books are located in the nonfiction section of the library under call number 398.2.  Why aren't they in the fiction section?  Take a look at the definition of a folk tale.  Even though these stories have been made up, they are part of history and tell the story of people from the past.
