The good news is that reading significantly enhances cognitive ability, especially in children. Get your whole family excited about reading by making an event about visiting the public library or even a local bookstore. Make sure everyone has a library card! All Fairfax County Public libraries and many area bookstores schedule story times and events for children of all ages.
Children of all ages enjoy being read aloud to. Read books to your child that are more difficult than the ones your child can read. These stories will challenge him or her with ideas and vocabulary that will build comprehension skills. Select books from a variety of genres, including: mysteries, fantasy, poetry, biography, realistic fiction, humor, adventure, and nonfiction. Here are some strategies to make the most out of your family reading:
Snuggle Up. Make sure that your child can see the pictures and the text that you are sharing.
Before Reading. Talk with your child about the title and illustrations. Ask if they can guess what the book is going to be about.
While Reading. Stop occasionally to ask questions. "How do you think Goldilocks felt when she opened her eyes and saw the bears staring down at her?" Ask your child to make predictions about what will happen next.
After Reading. Ask a few more questions: "What was your favorite part of the story?", "Would you like me to read another book by the same author?"
Family Reading Night. Set aside one night a week to read and discuss a book.
